The Division of Addiction in the Department of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine is seeking a board certified physician to serve as Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful candidate will have a leadership role in the Division of Addiction and hospital, reporting to the Division of Addiction Chair. The successful candidate will be expected to have clinical and teaching experience as well as evidence of leadership experience and collaboration with research.
The Addiction Division is one of the top academic addiction medicine programs in the country with division faculty having over $6.5 million in NIH funding as PIs, in fiscal year 2020. Notable areas of research include brain imaging in young adults at risk for addictions, medication development for opioid and cocaine use disorder, and translational research from basic science to community engaged research, as well as behavioral phenotyping patients with addictions. Faculty in the Division are also members or leaders of the Institute for Drug and Alcohol Studies and the C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research within VCU.
Clinically, the Division oversees an addiction consult service within VCU Health System, a dedicated multidisciplinary addiction treatment outpatient (MOTIVATE) clinic, and emergency room consultations for addictions.
The Division oversees the Virginia Health Practitioners Monitoring Program (HPMP), which refers healthcare professionals with a substance use disorder or mental health or physical condition for appropriate treatment and provide ongoing monitoring of treatment progress, which allows them to maintain their licensure.
The Division has an active collaboration with state government in research and policy related to addictions, with opportunities for faculty to develop expertise in this area.
Educationally, the Division has an ACGME accredited Addiction Medicine Fellowship program, with HRSA funding to support up to 4 fellows annually. The Division also trains residents, medical students, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students.
The Division also has an active collaboration with the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in areas of research and education.
The core responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, providing clinical coverage and supervising and teaching fellows, residents, and medical students within the VCU Health System. Leadership opportunities include Lead Clinician of the Health Practitioners Monitoring Program (HPMP), medication-assisted outpatient clinic and inpatient consult service. In addition, the successful candidate may participate in federally funded addiction research as a co-investigator or principal investigator.
Applicants should have a U.S. medical degree or equivalent (M.D. or D.O.) with licensure (license-eligible) to practice in the State of Virginia and DEA licensure. Post-doctoral credentialing in Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry are required. Successful applicants will have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
VCU Department of Psychiatry has well-equipped and staffed research facilities including the Collaborative Advanced Research Imaging (CARI) facility. CARI houses a research-dedicated 3T MRI scanner, outpatient treatment facilities and human behavioral laboratory facilities. The Division of Addiction also has close ties and/or collaborations within the VCU School of Medicine Pharmacology and Toxicology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Neurology.
