Job Description

An asphalt “screwman,” also known as a screed operator, is responsible for adjusting the screed on a paving machine to ensure proper asphalt depth, grade, and finish, ultimately ensuring a smooth and consistent road surface.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF POSITION:

• Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task.
• Follow all company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
• Follow direction of Foreman as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or jobsite.
• Operates valves to regulate the flow of material at a specified rate.
• Signals the paving machine operator to start and stop.
• Observes the distribution of material over road surfaces to ensure uniform distribution.
• Turn handwheels to set the angle and depth of the screed.
• Using depth gauge, verify depth specifications of the compacted asphalt.
• Performs daily maintenance on tools and ensures all tools are stored properly at the end of each shift.
• Assists in the general operator of each job site, including:
• Installing/removing auto paving electronics
• Adding/removing screed extensions
• Cleaning excess asphalt off the paver
• Daily preventative maintenance of paver
• Setup-up and maintenance of erosion control
• Loading and unloading materials
• Shoveling dirt, gravel, and asphalt
• Checking and maintaining grade stakes
• General clean-up around job site
• Assumes additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in asphalt paver screed operation for commercial and DOT paving projects.
• Driver’s license required. CDL a plus.
• Knowledge of grades, slope and paving electronics.
• Must have the ability to handle several projects at once, while maintaining tight deadlines.
• Must demonstrate excellent safety awareness, and a willingness to comply with company policies and safety standards.
• Must have reliable transportation and can travel. Periodic evenings, nights, weekends, and overtime hours are expected.
• Must always wear proper attire including safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image.
• Project a positive and cooperative attitude by maintaining courteous and professional conduct with supervisors, co-workers, customers, and the public.
• Must be able to provide proper documentation that you have the legal right to work in the United States.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Ability to withstand physical demands associated with heavy highway construction
• Must be able to adapt and work in extreme weather temperatures
• The following motions will be required: stretching, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, throwing, walking, standing, reaching, and squatting - these will occupy most of workday
• Ability to lift to 50 lbs. for repetitious lifting while using proper lifting techniques.
• Will be exposed to extremes of heat or cold weather.
