Job Description

Overview:

As a Commercial Underwriter, you'll play a crucial role in managing and growing a book of business. Your responsibilities include reviewing both new and renewal business, assessing coverage risks, preparing quotes, and responding to coverage inquiries within your authority. Building strong relationships with agents will be key to driving positive business outcomes. You'll work independently with limited supervision, exercising significant judgment. This position offers flexibility, with options for hybrid or remote work based on location and role requirements.

Responsibilities:

- Drive Profitable Outcomes: Analyze, select, and price business effectively to ensure profitability. Review inspection reports, risk assessments, and financial information to identify potential concerns and address them promptly.


- Enhance Risk Management: Collaborate with Risk Control for inspections and service needs. Implement corrective actions or remediation strategies for renewal accounts and escalate referrals needing higher-level approval.

- Ensure Compliance and Service Excellence: Meet service expectations and regulatory requirements by timely processing of renewals, non-renewals, and notices. Achieve key performance indicators for the portfolio.

- Foster Strong Relationships: Develop and maintain successful relationships with distribution partners through regular portfolio review calls, meeting customer guidelines, and occasional office visits. Coordinate with the distribution team to build pipelines, resolve issues, and manage changes.

- Cultivate a High-Performing Culture: Provide superior customer service and business acumen. Mentor support staff, conduct peer audits, and assist in training new hires. Review and approve underwriting decisions for lower authority levels.

- Additional Duties: Perform other related tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

- Required: High School diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, or a related field preferred. Relevant insurance designations (e.g., CPCU, IIA) are a plus. At least three years of experience in commercial underwriting, with one to two years in a property and casualty insurance company.

- Recommended: Broad knowledge of P&C insurance industry terms, practices, and regulations. Proficiency in advanced underwriting concepts, negotiation skills, and decision-making. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, vlookups) and attention to detail.

Compensation:

- Salary Range: $48,600 - $81,000, based on experience. Higher range of $53,400 - $89,000 in CA, CT, MA, NJ, NY, and PA, plus bonus eligibility.
