DESCRIPTION :
Marketview Arts is the hub for creativity and culture for York College in the community. The Curator is responsible for exhibitions in Gallery Hall, a 2,000-square-foot art gallery on the third floor of the facility. Gallery Hall is also used as a venue for a variety of events internal and external, public and private. The Curator will plan, curate, prepare and help to promote exhibitions in Gallery Hall as well as develop programming associated with those exhibitions. Reporting to the CCE Director of Operations, the Curator will collaborate with other CCE and Marketview Arts staff and provide training and mentorship to the Arts Fellows, Community Art Scholars, and other York College students as needed.



OUTCOMES :
The Curator of Special Exhibitions will produce high-quality art exhibitions in Gallery Hall at Marketview Arts, as well as related programming, that attract a diverse array of visitors and engage the College and broader York communities while providing learning opportunities for YCP students.
The Curator of Special Exhibitions will perform the following duties (average of 12 hours per week total):

  • Preparing all exhibitions in Gallery Hall, including installation and deinstallation of artwork, patching and repainting walls, and maintaining organized storage of installation supplies (tools, materials, and equipment), while taking into consideration the multiuse nature of the space. (25%)
  • Curating all exhibitions in Gallery Hall, including planning exhibition schedules, proposing budgets, and submitting requests for funding, with the goal of diversifying the art, artists, and visitors at Marketview Arts and expanding the relationship between the arts community and the College. (15%)
  • Planning and executing events and programming related to exhibitions in Gallery Hall in collaboration with other members of the Marketview Arts programming team and involving individuals and/or organizations in the community when appropriate. (15%)
  • Negotiating exhibition contracts with artists and working with the Director of Operations to maintain proper documentation for exhibitions and artwork for sale. (10%)
  • Coordinating the drop-off/delivery and pickup/return of artwork for Gallery Hall exhibitions with artists and lenders, and ensuring safe, organized storage of artwork. (10%)
  • Gathering information from artists for promotional purposes, and working with the Marketview Arts programming team on creating marketing materials for Gallery Hall exhibitions. (10%)
  • Engaging the Appell Arts Fellow and Powder Mill Foundation Arts Fellow, DelliCarpini Community Art Scholars, and Marketview Arts student staff in curatorial/preparator tasks, teaching them basic skills in these areas and mentoring them in art professional practices. (10%)
  • Providing guidance and occasional assistance with hanging and storing artwork and focusing gallery lighting in other areas of the Marketview Arts building as needed. (5%)

  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Art, Art History, Museum Studies, or related field
  • 2+ years of experience working in curatorial and art preparator roles
  • 2+ years of experience working with college students preferred
