Job Description

Background 

The Massachusetts Rivers Alliance is an environmental nonprofit organization that advocates for the protection and restoration of the state’s rivers. Mass Rivers engages in advocacy in partnership with our 85+ member organizations and conducts programs related to climate resilience, environmental justice, and capacity building for our members.

We are seeking a part-time Grants Program Manager. This staff person will be supervised by our Deputy Director, but will also work closely with other members of our team including our Engagement Manager, Bookkeeper, Policy Director, and Technical Specialist.

Responsibilities

The Grants Program Manager is responsible for managing the administrative responsibilities associated with our grant-funded projects. Responsibilities include: 

  • Assist internal and external team members with managing all grant-funded projects by ensuring compliance with grant terms, gathering evaluative data, submitting required reports, overseeing program logistics and operations, and providing marketing content as needed. 
  • Help design, execute, and manage our new statewide technical assistance program that will assist communities with initiating the removal of small, defunct dams.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for flow-through grant recipients, as well as for consultants working on our programs.
  • Assist team members with activities related to grant-seeking.
  • Assist team members with grant-funded project budget development and tracking, and preparing grant financial reports when needed. 
  • Organize and execute virtual and live workshops and conferences by preparing and updating work plans, coordinating registration, setting up events, securing venues, securing speakers, conducting post-event evaluations, and performing all other tasks needed to carry out events associated with our grant-funded programs.
  • Serve as a liaison to our member organizations who partner with us on projects.
  • Manage relationships with external service providers and vendors related to grant-funded programs. 
  • Manage or assist with other projects as needed. 
  • Use of a personal vehicle may be needed for statewide travel. 
  • Early morning and occasional evening events may be included.

Requirements

The ideal candidate is hardworking, proactive, resourceful, and understands how to work collaboratively in a small team environment. This candidate will also have strong interpersonal skills to help them work in a collegial and respectful way with member organizations, environmental professionals, and government staff. This work requires excellent organizational skills, project management experience, attention to detail, an entrepreneurial mindset, and the ability to multitask and respond to situations quickly. Minimum requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience;
  • 2+ years of progressively responsible experience working with privately and/or publicly grant-funded projects;
  • 2+ years of writing grant reports, budgets, and financial reports;
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communications;
  • Coursework in, or experience with, project evaluation;
  • Strong time management skills, including the ability to take initiative and work with minimal oversight; and
  • Active interest in and general knowledge of environmental policy or science is desirable.

Hours, Pay & Location

  • The position is based in Somerville, Massachusetts. Staff currently work a hybrid schedule with Tuesdays and Thursdays in the office. 
  • This hourly position is approximately 20 hours/week with an hourly rate is $32-$35, depending on experience.
