Position Summary/Description:

This position is a 100% remote work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Information Security Office ( ISO ) coordinates the institution's response to cyber risk, operates critical organization-wide security controls, and reports on the state of the security program to leadership and the Board. This security program ensures UNC -CH's compliance with the legal, statutory, regulatory, and compliance obligations of the secure use of technology and secure handling of electronic data covering all aspects of UNC -CH's mission.

Under the direction of the Information Security Operations Manager this position executes a high level of judgement across a broad range of hardware and software found at UNC -CH in order to quickly respond to and mitigate cybersecurity risks. This position contributes to the ongoing development of incident response procedures in response to changes in the legal, regulatory, compliance, technical, and threat landscapes. The position interacts frequently with the incident response Team Lead for Detection and Response as part of carrying out incident response duties and as part of ongoing incident response procedures development. This position reviews potential information security events, reviews logs, assists in detecting information security events, understands vulnerabilities, handles tickets and requests, triages potential information security incidents, documents findings and lessons learned, understands host-based security, and communicates with customers. 

The position operates with a high level of integrity, demonstrates good judgement, exhibits curiosity, understands expectations of privacy, is self-motivated, works well with and is trusted by peers, demonstrates excellent written and spoken communications, and maintains a calm demeanor in challenging situations. This position understands and keeps up with changes in industry best practices and the relevant legal and regulatory dimensions of cybersecurity incident response. This position also understand a broad range of computer hardware and software and its relevance to investigating and responding to cybersecurity attacks, is required to independently learn new hardware and software as encountered in carrying out incident response and must be able to understand and employ coding and systems analysis to support forensic computer analysis.

The position participates in shared group responsibilities including on-call rotations, analyst on point rotations, incident escalations, incident tickets and email response duties. This position will occasionally be required to complete work on-campus.

Education and Experience:

Experience in the field of Information Security or cybersecurity
* Effectively collaborating with both technical subject matter experts and customers
* Excellent written and spoken communication skills 
* Experience analyzing log data, threat hunting, and/or using a security information and event manager 
* Experience handling incidents or cybersecurity operations 
* Experience working at a college, university or a large, decentralized organization
* Recent information security training and/or certifications such as Security+, CISSP , GCFE , GCIH , CEH , or FTK ACE
