Job Description

Position summary:
The Museum Manager at the East Texas Oil Museum is responsible for overseeing the museum's daily operations, maintaining exhibits, coordinating tours, managing volunteers, handling finances, and executing educational and community outreach programs. This role requires strong leadership, communication skills, and a passion for history and education.

Museum Operations & Management

• Oversee the museum's daily operations, ensuring an engaging and well-maintained environment.
• Conduct daily inspections of exhibits to ensure they are in working order.
• Manage museum staff schedules, including Full-Time, Part-Time, Work-Study Students, and   Volunteers.
• Handle daily deposits, record-keeping, and museum expense records.
• Maintain accurate records of exhibits, museum history, and new donations/acquisitions.
• Manage gift shop inventory, ordering merchandise, and maintaining the POS system.
• Submit and track work orders for building maintenance and work with contractors on  renovation/remodel projects.
• Develop strategies to increase museum revenue and recommend appropriate advertising   opportunities (print, TV, billboards, etc.).

Exhibitions & Community Engagement

• Plan, develop, and execute special rotating exhibits aligned with the museum's mission.
• Organize and lead educational events and fundraising events to expand museum outreach.
• Manage social media platforms, media relations, and marketing efforts.
• Solicit school groups, tour companies, and corporate partnerships to drive visitor engagement and   repeat bookings.
• Develop, plan, and oversee the East Texas History Summit (annual event in January).

Education & Volunteer Program

• Lead museum tours for individual visitors and group bookings.
• Recruit, retain, and train the Docent Guild and volunteers.
• Foster relationships with local schools, community organizations, and historical societies.

• Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, History, Education, Business Administration, or related field.
• Minimum two years of professional experience in a customer-facing role.
• Proven experience in supervising employees and handling cash transactions.
• Knowledge of the East Texas oil and gas industry and its historical significance.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and social media management.
• Strong time management skills, organizational abilities, and attention to detail.
• Ability to engage diverse audiences, including school groups and community organizations.

• Proficiency in museum management software and standard office applications.

• Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and some evenings.
• Must be able to work in high-stress periods with large visitor volumes.
• Work is performed in a museum, office, and retail environment.
• Comfortable working in an office, exhibit spaces, and public areas.
• Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
• Limited exposure to physical risk.

• Provide resources for safe operation of units. Create and support workplace safety.

Kilgore College does not participate in the federal Social Security program. 

All full-time positions are located in Kilgore, TX. No fully work from home positions are available at this time. All employees must be available to physically present to work on the Kilgore, TX or Longview, TX Campus. Some Part-Time and Adjunct positions may be offsite but the candidate MUST live in the State of Texas.

Positions will remain open until filled. Some Adjunct and Part-Time teaching positions may remain open perpetually as the need for part time instructors fluctuates with student enrollment. Teaching positions will be required to submit official transcripts upon an offer of employment. An offer of employment will be contingent upon passing a background check. Federal law prohibits the employment of unauthorized aliens. All persons hired must submit satisfactory proof of employment authorization and identity within three (3) days of being hired. Failure to submit proof within the required time shall result in immediate employment termination. All position appointments are subject to approval by the college's Board of Trustees.
