Job Description

WCS’s Forest and Climate Change (FCC) Program builds innovative solutions to ensure that Earth’s remaining forests and peatlands can deliver climate change mitigation and adaptation benefits at the scale we need. This includes leading cross-regional and multi-institution coalitions to protect high integrity forests and peatlands, reduce deforestation and forest degradation, promote forest restoration, and build resilience to climate change impacts. FCC’s Science team fills gaps in data and knowledge to unlock climate finance for advancing these priorities in field sites around the world, from boreal Canada to Melanesia, with a particular concentration in Latin America, Central Africa and Asia-Pacific. Our work aims to ensure the effective, durable, and equitable environmental and socio-ecological outcomes of these investments.

Job Summary:
The Natural Climate Solutions Data Analyst will support the evidence-informed design, implementation, and evaluation of FCC’s priority activities. Initial areas of focus will include evaluating the potential greenhouse gas mitigation and climate regulation services from alternative conservation approaches in global peatlands and in high integrity tropical forests.

Major Responsibilities:

Collaborate with relevant internal and external partners to understand data and analytical needs in support of innovative finance initiatives and of large-scale conservation programs in key regions.
Develop and document research approaches and methodologies, and iteratively improve these plans with support from WCS programs and the FCC Science team.
Design fit-for-purpose workflows and analyses to efficiently produce outputs that meet user specifications.
Manage spatial data acquisition, processing, quality assurance, and documentation.
Organize and maintain databases, ensuring data integrity, consistency, and accessibility for internal users.
Take leadership in interpreting and communicating research outputs, results, and key findings.
Produce visually appealing and informative outputs that effectively communicate analytical insights.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate spatial data into various applications and platforms.
Present research outputs to the FCC team and WCS collaborators via oral presentations, written reports, and mapping applications.
Assist with quick turnaround requests, such as funding opportunities, reporting requirements, feasibility assessment, partnership development

Qualification Requirements

Master’s degree required, with 2-3 years of additional work experience preferred.
Experience related to greenhouse gas emissions data and accounting, natural resource management, forests, peatlands, climate finance, spatial planning, REDD+, or a related field.
Experience working in the field in peatlands or tropical forest ecosystems a plus.
Strong quantitative and geospatial skills, including programming in work environments such as R, Python and/or Google Earth Engine.
Familiarity with use of remote sensing data to examine ecosystem structure, carbon stocks, land cover change, and/or human pressure.
Experience with data management processes, particularly including data acquisition, processing, quality assurance, metadata management, and documentation.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in statistical analysis and data visualization best practices.
Experience managing multiple long-term projects and meeting firm deadlines.
Ability to work both independently and in a dynamic team environment.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional and global teams in multicultural environments.

Additional Requirements:

Willingness to travel roughly 10% of time.
Excellent spoken and written English. Spanish and/or French language competency preferred.
Evidence of contributions to scientific publications and presentations preferred.
Ability to join occasional meetings during non-standard work hours to accommodate multiple time zones.
