Job Description

Are you a Gamemaster (GM) who's been wanting to expand your scope or add a little extra money to your pocket running tabletop role-play games (TTRPGs)? Now's your chance!

The Dragons Concord in Fairfax, VA is looking for individuals with experience running TTRPGs to join our team as part-time Professional Storytellers.

What's the difference between us and any other "Friendly Local Gaming Store"? W e focus on providing professional gaming services and experiences to gamers and GMs, rather than just selling selling books or dice. Our focus is on growing the gaming community as a whole by making roleplay gaming more accessible, providing a centralized location with public and private gaming spaces, and offering professionally moderated gaming sessions in many popular and emerging TTRPG systems.

Joining our team doesn't mean sitting behind a counter selling retail merchandise. It means working with a team of like-minded individuals who have a passion for the roleplay gaming community and want to help it grow, thrive, and have fun doing it.

If hired, you will be joining an established team of experienced GMs running professional quality games on a paid commissions basis. All you'll need is your talent at the table and we'll provide the rest! You'll also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of other activities including in-store events, game system development, prop and costume work, and future store planning.

The ideal candidate for this position will have at least 3 years of experience moderating tabletop role-play games such as Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), Pathfinder, or Call of Cthulhu or miniature wargames such as Star Wars Legion or trading card games such as Magic: The Gathering (MTG). Additional experience in roleplay adjacent fields such as creative writing, sound or video production, prop making, etc. are also highly valued, but not necessary.

All applicants will be asked to conduct a panel interview attended by several of our current employees and Storytellers, either in-person or via Google Meet. Successful candidates will then be asked to run a game session in the store for 3-5 players from our current staff. This game session will be a "one-shot" adventure with pre-generated characters in the game system and world of your choosing.

Benefits

  • Employee discount on all items in the store
  • Free snacks/drinks while on shift or hosting a session
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Other standard benefits as required by VA law
  • Future benefits may be added

Responsibilities

  • Standard retail responsibilities such as processing transactions and maintaining store cleanliness
  • Prepare and moderate roleplay gaming sessions for up to 6 players in at least one primary "modern" game system (i.e. D&D5e, Pathfinder 2e, Call of Cthulhu 7e, etc)
  • Provide GM assistance to fellow Storytellers as needed
  • Additional tasks related to facilitation of gaming and store events may be requested but will not be mandated

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience as a GM (required)
  • Experience in sound/video editing (desirable)
  • Experience moderating miniature wargaming events such as BattleTech, Star Wars Legion, or Warhammer 40k (desirable)
  • Experience facilitating trading card game tournaments with Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, or Lorcana (desirable)
  • Experience in event planning or running game tables at conventions (desirable)

We look forward to hearing from you!
