Job Description

The Student Success Coach will assist students in navigating their academic journeys, addressing barriers to success, and developing academic and career plans. You will monitor student progress closely, identifying at-risk students and collaborating with faculty, staff, and campus resources to ensure students persist toward degree completion. Through regular communication, resource referrals, and targeted support, you will empower students to achieve their academic and professional goals. Additionally, you will contribute to the development of innovative programs to enhance student retention and success while maintaining accurate records and participating in ongoing professional development. Essential Functions:
  • Contributes to persistence, retention and completion by regularly monitoring student progress, using a case-management model. Intervenes, advocates, and recommends resources and solutions to alleviate barriers to success.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for Student Success.
  • Establishes a relationship of trust in which students can share aspirations, concerns and interests.
  • Assesses assigned new students' academic needs and career goals and creates an Academic Plan for Success. For new students, this will use various assessments to develop the Academic Plan for Success.
  • Coordinates and provides support services such as academic development, time management, study skills, wellness coaching, and referrals for academic tutoring.
  • Motivates and encourages students' persistence toward achieving a post-secondary degree.
  • Identifies at-risk students and resolves student problems by clarifying issues, researching and exploring options, and implementing solutions. As necessary, escalate unresolved problems to appropriate parties and follow up to ensure resolution.
  • Works with assigned students from onboarding through graduation by communicating with students weekly and at other regular intervals per College expectations.
  • Closely tracks students' progress to ensure class attendance and academic progress, identifying trends and behaviors that indicate a need for intervention. Respond to Early Academic Alerts with the student and appropriate College faculty and staff.
  • Provides required data and reports to the Director of Financial Literacy and Student Success, and other College staff to monitor student progress and benchmarks regularly.
  • Assists assigned students in connecting with campus and community resources to provide support and success.
  • Collaborates with students and with the students' faculty, Office of Student Life and Engagement personnel, athletic coaches, financial aid, Office of Career Services, business office staff, and other appropriate parties to align efforts and to develop intentional interventions to help students progress toward their academic goals.
  • Provides proactive academic advising and success coaching for all first-year students and students who have not declared a major.
  • Collaborates with the student and the Office of Career Services to help students envision and achieve their post-graduation goals.
  • Connects students with appropriate resources for financial literacy counseling.
  • Ensures the accuracy of records of wellness coaching, advising appointments, and outreach efforts are maintained and entered into the Carter Center for Academic Success (CCAS) electronic database.
  • Teaches one section of Gateway Freshman Seminar per year.
  • Participates in training and professional development activities necessary to increase knowledge and skills required of Student Success Coaches.
  • Develops knowledge of necessary technology and adherence to College curriculum, policies and procedures related to degree requirements, courses, course selection, scheduling, pre-registration, registration, and College admission.
  • Works as an active member of the Carter Center for Academic Success. Provides support and development to overarching CCAS programs and initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, sociology, counseling, education, or a related academic discipline.
  • At least one (1) year of experience providing specialized support services to students.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in a diverse, inclusive, and student-centered environment with students of various learning styles, abilities, cultures, identities, and life experiences.
