Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Substance Abuse Counselor provides direct services to clients of the Bill Wilson Center, primarily for youth and young adults, ages 12-25 yr. The Counselor will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing services including emergency shelter, counseling, mental health, and drop-in center services to homeless and at-risk individuals and families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Facilitate Substance Abuse groups and 1:1 sessions.
• Maintain Data for 7 Challenges and participate in Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement processes to ensure Fidelity to the 7 Challenges model.
• Act as a Leadership mentor to others providing 7 Challenges groups and 1:1 sessions.
• Quality assurance and outcomes tracking in agency substance abuse services.
• Provide comprehensive assessment of service needs and recommend interventions.
• Facilitate individual and group interventions such as skills building and education.
• Foster relationships with client family and friends.
• Coordinate services with other providers.
• Provide referrals and linkages to services based on client needs.
• Provide follow-up to ensure services are obtained.
• Provide counseling and advocacy as needed.
• Provide crisis intervention as needed within scope of practice.
• Develop collaborative relationships with community partners.
• Communicate effectively with an inter-disciplinary team and participate in team meetings.
• Maintain statistical data and complete reports as appropriate.
• Attend agency and other program meetings and trainings.
• Participate in agency Program Quality Improvement activities.
• Participate in agency Safety initiatives and report safety issues.
• Maintain and observe all HIPAA regulations.
• Develop and maintain community resources for education and referrals.
• Demonstrate reliable and timely attendance.
• Follow directions and complete tasks on schedule.
• Use problem solving methods to continuously improve operations.
• Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; two to four years related experience and/or training; Valid state-approved substance abuse/addiction prevention certification required. Experience with culturally diverse youth is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, write, and speak effectively in English; bilingual (English/Spanish) skills required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Driving required; current driver's license and insurance; CPR and First Aid Certification; background check and TB test required. COVID-19 vaccination required unless an accommodation is approved.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts as required for reporting.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Knowledge of Internet software, spreadsheet software, and word processing software; Internet research skills required; familiarity with databases and MS office.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Regularly required to sit, stand, use hands, reach, and talk or hear; may lift up to 20 pounds; specific vision abilities required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Moderate noise level in the work environment.
