Has full responsibility for the safety, supervision and education of assigned Head Start children.

Job Description:

Has full responsibility for the safety, supervision and education of all assigned Head Start children while under the care of the program.  Performs a variety of duties of average difficulty, incumbent will be responsible for curriculum, revision and developing lesson plans; assist in supervising Teacher Assistant; evaluates and makes recommendations on education activities.

Essential Duties:

Mandatory reporter of all suspected incidents of child abuse and neglect.

In the event of a disaster, Head Start employees are required to provide assistance in accordance with the tribe’s Emergency Operations Plan or their level of training (CPR and/or First Aid).

All San Felipe Pueblo Head Start applicants must submit mandatory criminal background check information to the Human Resources Director before employment with the program or following any conviction occurring after commencement of employment.

Must follow a Drug-Free Work Place Policy and follow the intent of the Drug-Free Work Place Act.

Must have an annual physical and TB screening

May be assigned to bus monitoring duties.

Teacher Responsibilities:

Maintains open communication and develops relationships with children, parents and staff.

Encourage involvement of the families of the children in the Head Start program.

Attends Parent Committee meetings and other related meetings as required.

Serves as a role model for children, parents and the community.

Works cooperatively with other teaching staff, management staff and parents to plan for activities.

Contribute to child’s learning by actively communicating and interacting with all children, both indoors and outdoors, to promote language and literacy.

Plan and implement learning experiences that advance the intellectual and physical development of children including improving the readiness of children for school by developing their literacy and phonemic, print and numeracy awareness.

Implements the SPARK (Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids) program.

Responsible for the daily operation of assigned classroom.

Support the social and emotional development of all children.

Screen all incoming children within 45 days of entry using the Dial 4 screening tool.

Administer LAP 3 assessment in the fall, winter and spring to evaluate children’s progress.

Make Home Visits twice a year to discuss children’s needs with parents.

Plan and conduct Parent/Teacher conferences twice a year to discuss children’s progress with parents.

Prepare weekly lesson plans using Head Start Child Outcomes, including designing a variety of learning experiences.

Provide a learning environment appropriate to each child’s individual learning style and needs.

Plan field trips appropriate to curriculum goals and objectives and Head Start Outcomes.

Establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment and assure safety, space per child, and sufficient materials and equipment are age appropriate/developmental appropriate for all children.

Adhere to playground duty and bus monitoring schedule to assure the safety of all children in Head Start.

Assist custodian in maintaining cleanliness of classroom.

Maintain complete and accurate child files, daily attendance and daily meal counts.

Submit all monthly reports and other requested reports to supervisor in a timely manner.

Prepare requisitions for classroom materials and supplies.

Supervise all children at all times indoor and outdoor.

Follow rules and regulations set for by the Tribal Council in Tribal Personnel Policies and Procedures.

Adheres to Head Start Performance Standards, and follows Head Start in-house Policies and Procedures.

Actively pursue AA degree and beyond by taking classes through a college or university.

Participate in meetings, trainings and conferences for professional development to expand knowledge base.

Adheres to Other duties as assigned.

Supervision and Guidelines: Guidelines include the personnel policy and department policies and procedures.

Reports to the Education Coordinator.

Supervises and/or oversees Teacher Assistant w/help from Education Coordinator.

Qualifications:

To perform his job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

  • Education:AA degree in Early Childhood Education and/or two years related experience working in Early Childhood program.      
  • Experience/Basic Knowledge: Must have good communication skills with staff and parents.  Good knowledge in computer skills.  Considerable knowledge of Early Childhood Education with well-developed organizational skills.  Ability to work closely with children, parents and staff.  Ability to supervise and manage the work of Teacher Assistant and classroom volunteers.   Ability to converse in both Keres and English languages
  • Required Licenses/Certifications: Prefer a valid driver’s license. Must have a food handler’s certificate and must maintain a current CDA licensure.  Must have and maintain current CPR/First Aid.
  • Physical Requirements: Must have manual dexterity to enter and retrieve data from a computer. Ability to sit and stand for long periods. Bends and stoops regularly.  Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Preferences: San Felipe Preference and Veteran’s Preference.

Working Conditions:

Works in office. Sits for long periods of time and types.  Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
